Winder Power boosts morale In British Manufacturing
If the lights go out in your town this winter and your electricity supplier needs UK support repairing their network, who can they rely on? Is there enough manufacturing know-how to get the power back up and running with minimum delay? Leeds based Winder Power's specialist transformer and distribution division, Winder Electrical, is used to such challenges, and excels in delivering the right solution when there isn't much time to waste.
2006 has been a year of real achievement for Winder Electrical. Following a management buyout in 2005, the new team in charge has transformed the Leeds business into a world class player. The Company now provides power and distribution transformers, switchgear and installation services to leading utility and power organisations around the world.
Winder Electrical's order levels have doubled in the last twelve months and its client list includes United Utilities, Northern Ireland Electric, Yorkshire Water and Scottish & Southern Energy. The Company is looking to expand its production facilities to meet this growth in the business with new premises in the area. A recruitment plan is also in place for early 2007.
Few people can fail to have noticed how prominent the environment has become in all discussions involving power supply, and here again Winder has evolved to meet the demands faced by the industry. The company is heavily involved in specifying, producing and managing transformer installations for wind farms and household waste site gas generators.
As Winder Electrical general manager Paul Matthews says: "As a first year of a new business model we couldn't have asked for a better start, with a brimming order book and lots of potential for new projects next year. Our close ties with ecologically sound power generation technologies will also continue to grow in importance for us, and gives us tremendous potential for further success in the next few years."
And the success doesn't end there. Winder Power's second business, Newton Derby, is a leading and long established manufacturer of high specification generators and associated products for the UK with an extensive worldwide client base.
Re-located to Leeds last year, Newton Derby adds a specialist second string to Winder Power's bow within the power supply industry.
Customers served include the UK Ministry of Defence, European rail and power generation companies overseas defence facilities. Recent projects include innovative applications from powering trains to hovercrafts, as well as supporting the military with mobile power supplies in the field.
So, whilst many people bemoan the demise of manufacturing in the UK, Winder Power is bucking the trend, going some way to proving that if enough thought is given to using its strengths, manufacturing companies can still succeed in the international marketplace. Back to news >>
